Sustaining Data Quality in Environmental Monitoring through Adaptive Maintenance

Abstract
Environmental monitoring networks collect continuous measurements to support climate analysis and resource management. Over extended deployments, sensor drift, communication loss, and maintenance constraints degrade data reliability. A distributed monitoring system operating across agricultural and ecological sites was examined over four consecutive years. Approximately 11% of sensors exhibited measurable calibration drift, while intermittent connectivity affected data completeness during seasonal extremes. A hybrid validation approach combining peer comparison and periodic field inspection was introduced. After implementation, anomaly reports decreased substantially, and downstream modeling accuracy improved. Long-term sustainability depends on maintenance strategies as much as on initial system design.
